Attachment & Relationship Challenges
Why do I keep repeating the same relationship patterns?

Relationships Can Be One of Our Greatest Sources of Joy and Pain
As humans, we're wired for connection. We all long to feel safe, accepted, understood, and valued by the people who matter most to us. When those needs aren't consistently met, we naturally develop ways of protecting ourselves from further hurt. These protective patterns are not signs of weakness. They often reflect the ways we learned to survive emotionally.
While these strategies may once have helped us feel safe, they can sometimes make it difficult to experience the closeness and connection we long for as adults.
What Are Attachment Wounds?
Attachment wounds are emotional injuries that develop when important relationships leave us feeling unsafe, rejected, unseen, emotionally alone, or disconnected. They often begin in childhood but can also develop through later experiences such as:
-
Emotional neglect
-
Repeated criticism or rejection
-
Inconsistent caregiving
-
Bullying
-
Betrayal
-
Abandonment
-
Infidelity
-
Significant relationship loss
Not everyone responds to these experiences in the same way. However, they can influence how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and what we expect from relationships.
How Attachment Wounds May Show Up
You might recognise yourself in some of these experiences:
-
You worry people will leave you.
-
You find yourself needing reassurance, overthinking messages, or feeling anxious when someone becomes distant.
-
You keep people at arm's length.
-
You value independence but find it difficult to let others get emotionally close or depend on them.
-
You put everyone else's needs before your own.
-
You struggle to say no, avoid conflict, or feel responsible for keeping others happy.
-
You don't feel "good enough."
-
You often compare yourself to others, fear rejection, or believe you need to earn love and acceptance.
-
You keep repeating similar relationship patterns.
Although the people may change, the feelings and challenges seem familiar.
Why Do These Patterns Keep Repeating?
Many of the ways we relate to others today were shaped by the relationships that helped us survive earlier in life. Our nervous system learns what feels safe. If closeness once came with criticism, unpredictability, or disappointment, your mind and body may continue responding to relationships as though those earlier experiences are still happening.
These responses are often automatic rather than conscious. Understanding them can be the first step towards creating change.
Attachment Is About More Than Romantic Relationships
Although attachment is often discussed in the context of romantic relationships, it influences many areas of our lives. Attachment patterns can affect how we relate to:
-
Romantic partners
-
Family members
-
Friends
-
Colleagues
-
Authority figures
-
Ourselves
At the heart of attachment is our need for safety, connection, and belonging.
Healing Attachment Wounds
Healing doesn't mean becoming a different person. It means understanding yourself with greater compassion and recognising that many of your emotional responses developed for understandable reasons.
With the support of therapy, it becomes possible to:
-
Feel safer in close relationships.
-
Develop healthier boundaries.
-
Build trust gradually.
-
Respond rather than react.
-
Communicate needs more openly.
-
Strengthen self-worth.
-
Experience greater emotional security.
Healing is not about striving for perfect relationships. It's about creating relationships where you can feel more authentic, connected, and secure.
My Approach
I work primarily from Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), an attachment-based and evidence-informed approach that helps people understand the emotional patterns shaping their relationships. Rather than focusing on changing behaviours alone, EFIT helps us explore the emotions and attachment needs beneath those behaviours.
Together, we'll make sense of the protective strategies you've developed, process painful emotional experiences, and create new ways of relating that feel safer and more fulfilling. Therapy is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to your unique experiences and goals.
You Deserve Relationships Where You Feel Safe
Healthy relationships don't require you to hide who you are, constantly prove your worth, or carry everything on your own.
If you're ready to better understand your relationship patterns, heal attachment wounds, and build more secure connections, with others and with yourself. I'd be honoured to support you on your journey.
